What's box office guru?
We also decided to research the overall sales of horror movies. We used a site called 'Box Office Guru' to see which films are achieving the highest profits.Box office guru is a database of box office statistics on motion pictures released from 1989 onwards, it also shows weekend previews and reviews. We will use the results of this to contribute to our decision on what kind of horror we should make.
What type of horror made money?
According to a recent box office guru report, the highest grossing film at the moment is the new james Bond film, spectre. This is an action film, not a horror, so this isn't relevant to the genre we're researching. There are also no horror films in the top 10 in this report.
The first horror film to appear on the list is 'Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension'. It's an American 3D horror film with the sub genre of supernatural. It was directed by Gregory Plotkin and written by Jason Pagan, Andrew Stark, Adam Robitel and Gavin Heffernan. It is the sixth and final addition to the 'Paranormal Activity' series. The film was released on October 23, 2015. Box office guru has reported that it had earned $885,000.
From these results, I can conclude that 2015 hasn't seen the release of many horror films and that there's room in the market for a new horror film. As 'Paranormal activity' didn't get into the top 10 with the sub genre of supernatural, I don't think choosing this kind of horror story line would be wise. Taking this into account, I will research the other kinds of horrors available to construct an interesting story line out of.

Different types of horror...
Different types of horror embark on different plots. The different types of horror can be broken down into different sub genres.
Slasher horror films usually involve a psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims in a violent manner- oftren with a cutting tool. For example, a knife or axe. Slasher films can also overlap with the crime and thriller genre. The antagonist (a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something) is usually masked. These films usually reult in everyone dying and the killer escaping. 'A nightmare on elm street' is a good example of a slasher of horror film.

Gothic horror films are quite different. The storyline normally include elements of goth and horror; it may have romance that unfolds during the film. They often create lots of suspense. For example, a gothic horror could follow the story of a vampire and human falling in love. 'The twilight Saga' could be a good example of gothic horror.
|
Psychological horror films are another example. These horror plots normally rely on a character's emotional instability. These kinds of horrors often involve a family moving to a new house, it then unfolds throughout the film that the location has a bad history of murder/death. Throughout the story, the audience will get to watch the protagonist (the leading and usually good character in a film) play out the same plot as the previous residents of the house. Often by the end of these kinds of horrors the protagonists have been driven insane by the location they're in and feel compelled to kill their own family. An example of this kind of horror could be 'Gothika'.
