Soul Bass was born May 8th 1920 in New York city, he died on April 25th 1996 in Los Angles aged 75. He was an American graphic designer and Academy Award winning filmmaker, best known for his design of motion picture title sequences; film posters, and corporate logos.
During his 40-year career, Bass worked for some of Hollywood's most famous filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock who directed the well known horror 'Psycho', Otto Preminger who directed over 35 feature films and Stanley Kubrick who directed 'The Shining' . |
In the 1959 movie 'Anatomy of a Murder' - directed by Otto Preminger, Saul Bass presented the film title by putting each member of the cast next to disassembled body parts. He dissembles the body parts and then puts them back into the place in which they should be, making it look as if it's a puzzle. No high technology was needed when making this is was as simple paper cutouts on a grey uniform. This intro sequence has travelled through decades by keeping it's cutting-edge quality.
