what is a slasher film?
Horror films that tend to depict a series of violent murders or assaults by an attacker armed with something sharp. Slasher films tend to be very gory- viewers get to see lots of blood and insides of bodies. Rather than the audience being scared by a ghost or a zombie apocalypse, they will be scared by a story line including serial killers, vulnerable people being brutally murdered with sharp weapons.
the backgroud of slasher genre
Slasher films typically have a violent psychopath at the center of the story line. He/she murders a large proportion of the victims. The killer will often use bladed tools, so the death for the victim will be slow and painful. Lexically, the word 'slasher' is used colloquially as a term for a horror film which involves a lot of brutal murders, the sub gene has an entrenched set of characters that supposedly set the slasher films from the others sub genre films.
Some critics say that the film Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was an early influence on the slasher genre, critics say that the genre's peak occurred in American films released during the 1970's and 80's. These classic slasher films include Tobe Hooper's 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (1974), John Carpenter's 'Halloween' (1978), Victor Miller and Sean S. Cunningham's 'Friday the 13th' (1980). Wes Craven's 'Scream' (1996) revived public interest in the genre, and several of the original slasher franchises were rebooted in the years following the release of 'Scream'.
