What is our horror?
We have decided to make our horror a slasher. Because of this we thought we should probably see how the public have responded to other slasher films that have previously been released! We tried to do this using Google Trends.
What is google trends?
Google trends is a public web facility that belongs to Google Inc. It is based on GoogleSearch. Google Trends can be used to show how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages.
What films did we research?
We decided to research 'Scream' because it is considered a traditional slasher. This is because it follows many of the stereotypes of slashers: there are several sites of activity, there is a blonde who gets killed, there is a brunette final girl who lives throughout the entire 'Scream' series, there's a masked killer who uses a sharp weapon. It was made in 1997 by Wes Craven.

We also decided that 'Nightmare on Elm Street' would be another good film to research for the are reason as 'Scream'- they are traditional slashers. It follows many of the same stereotypes; a killer who's had a traumatic childhood goes around terrorising people with cutting weapons, there are many sites of activity too.

It seems that over the past 10 years it hasn't been overly popular, until a short increase in 2011 and then a large increase that hasn't yet declined completely in 2015. From this we can infer that 'Scream' is becoming more popular again. we can also infer from this that there has been a rebirth in the interest in traditional slasher films and therefor our film would make a large profit.
This map and key shows that the interest in 'Scream' globally. It appears that the film is most popular in Australia, the US and the UK. From this we can infer that the producers of scream focused on advertising the film the most in these areas of the world and this is why it has been so successful. This means that if we are trying to continue in the line of popular slasher horror films, we should focus our efforts on making the film appealing to the British, American and Australian people.
Social context?
Because of how popular 'Scream' has been recently with people in the UK, US and Australia, we are going to make our horror relate and appeal to these people so that it would yield a higher profit overall.
For example, we will feature people who speak with the same accent as people in the UK, this will make it relatable. We will feature some names and brands that are recognisable to people in these countries.

This means that if we are trying to continue in the line of popular slasher horror films, we should focus our efforts on making the film appealing to the British people because this is where we would like our opening title sequence to be successful and popular.
social context?
Because of how we want the opening title sequence to be popular in this country, we will advertise it a lot. As the target audiences of most horror films is from 15-25, we will use advertising platforms that will be most likely to reach people of this age. For example- we could set up a Twitter account for the film and start a trending hashtag. We could do similar things on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr. We could create an app for the film, we could show a trailer as a TV advert and also use YouTube as a platform to display it. We think these platforms will be successful because we know that people of the target age group use these things on a daily basis. This means that our film is sure to reach them in more ways than one.
